Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary
Hiked at Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary
the other day:
Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary
It is a pleasant and easy walk. I
saw lots of families with little kids.
Indeed, it is a very easy hike that does
not seem to be too challenging to little
ones.
An interesting thing to go see is the
gigantic fireplace. It is on the map
found at the Park Entrance. I picked
up a paper copy of the map and then
returned it to the box at the end of
my hike.
There is ample parking at Thorncrag. Also,
there are a number of different trails.
The elevation rise on the trails is very
modest. There is some rise but, compared
to hiking in the mountains, these trails
have gentle slopes. I'd say that the trails
rise and fall no more than your average walk
through the woods on relatively flat land.
I grew up in Auburn but had never been to
Thorncrag. The lesson for me is that there
are all kinds of things just under your nose
if you will look for them.
The Address for Throncrag is, in my mind,
the address of the Hannaford Brothers grocery
store that is the nearest big landmark. Hannaford
Brothers is located at 692 Sabattus Street, Lewiston,
ME 04240-3832.
Find the store and then drive behind the store to find
Thorncrag. To drive behind the store, take Highland
Spring Road which runs next to the store.
You will come to the end of Highland Spring Road
almost immediately. Turn right and you will
see the entrance to Thorncrag on your immediate
left.
